Well, this is the year when I finally get to start attending conventions again. Back in my younger days when I was the RPGA organizer for Arkansas I managed to fit in a half dozen or more conventions a year throughout the southeast. Alas, those days are far behind me. Whether because of work schedules, money, or just time, I have not been to a convention in over 5 years. This year, all of that changes.
First up on the convention calendar is Robert E Howard Days in Cross Plains, TX on June 10-11. This is not a gaming oriented gathering, but rather a celebration of the author who helped define the sword and sorcery genre in the 1930’s. Howard gave us such iconic characters as Kull, Soloman Kane, and most famous of all, Conan. Howard Days is an annual event held in Cross Plains to commemorate the life and work of this man. In addition, there are tours, talks, swap meets, and fellowship with Howard fans from around the world.
This will be my first visit to Howard Days so Amy and I both are very excited. I was also thrilled to learn that Philip J Reed of Steve Jackson Games will be attending as well. Expect lots of pictures and video when we get back.
The second con on my itinerary is one I helped organize many years ago, TrollCon. Organized by the awesome guys over at Troll Lord Games, this is THE gaming convention for Central Arkansas. I am really looking forward to getting in on this con once the dates have been announced. Best part about this convention is that it will be in Little Rock, AR, just a brief drive for us. That means more money for gaming, woohoo!
If you find yourself attending one of these shows feel free to drop me a line. I’m always interested in meeting you guys and talking shop over a cold beverage.
