I’ve been lurking for awhile now and admiring everyone’s collections so I thought it was about time that I share mine. I got my start collecting Conan before I really started collecting Robert E Howard. Alas my Del Rey collection was sold a few years back and I am just now starting to rebuild it.
As a bonus you get a glimpse of some of my Tolkien collection as well. 🙂
My collection really began with the Tor Conan series that I would find on sale cheaply in both book stores and retail establishments. Heck, the local dollar store was the source of two or three of these at one point. I picked up Wings in the Night as a “used” copy at my local Hastings a couple months ago. The other day I went in, saw Wings in the Night as a “used” copy and bought it again thinking for some reason I had one of the other volumes in the series. Oh well, duplicate is going to the local library.
Almost all of the Ace, Lancer, and Berkley volumes here came from my local used book store. I completely cleaned them out of everything Howard and Conan related. Or so I thought. Just last week it occurred to me to check the western section and lo I found “The Last Ride”. So now I have definitely cleaned them out. 🙂
My fanzine collection began at Howard Days this year when I started picking up copies of The Cimmerian, The Dark Man, and REH: Two-Gun Raconteur all of which I am slowly but surely making my way through. I was also fortunate enough to pick up a couple of other titles while I was there as well including the excellent “Anniversary: Glenn Lord and the Howard Collector” which I just read last week.
And there you have it for now. I have not included my “Savage Sword of Conan” collection as it is still growing and I have a shipment of new adds from eBay that should be arriving soon. My current focus for collecting has been the SSoC magazines, the Del Rey titles collections, and supplementary texts such as “The Neverending Hunt”, etc.
I look forward to sharing more of the collection with everyone as it grows in the weeks and months ahead.
